- Black and White Tree Photography

This gallery contains black and white tree photography. Here you will find many serene tree landscapes. There are also a number of sepia tone tree photographs. There is something majestic about trees and the black and white photography eliminates the distractions of color leaving the elegance of textures and shading of the bark and the branches. One could say it is the Zen of photography.

In my black and white tree photography I pay particular attention to the light and shadows interplay. My aim is to express the emotion of the trees and the surrounding landscape in a way that allows the viewer to discover the subtle tones and contrasts. Leaving them with some element of surprise. For example in #236 Moses Tree the amazing rays of light streaming through the grandiose cedar tree creates a sense of wonder, an almost mythic quality.

Each of the black and white tree photographs here tells a story. The “Tranquility” series of trees set in the mist of winter brings out the dream like serene character of the tree. Autumn in Paris portrays the splendor of one of the oldest and tallest red oak trees on the west coast. Evening Glow pair was taken fall, shows the delicate textures of the branches reflecting the evening rays of light.

The #349 Trees in the Mist is a great example of the antique style of black and white tree photography. Taken in the fall these sleepy oak trees remind me of giant dancers waving their long limbs, bending and twisting reaching the sun. Finally the winter trees create the festive atmosphere of Christmas time. Decorated with snow white powder snow they stand silent amongst the white carpet of snow.
