Fine art gallery of serene waterfall prints. These beautiful river prints symbolize the movement of life force and ever changing cycles of life. Water has been at the center of human mythology, rituals, and traditions for centuries. The sacred waters of the River Ganges is said to have the power to wash away all sins and purify the Spirit. In the Bible Jesus gave a woman living water as a symbol of eternal life. Many other cultures revere water as the giver of life.
As a photographer my challenge was how to use two dimensional waterfall prints to covey their very essence. I would often sit by the local river observing the interplay of different currents. In the back of my mind I heard the words of my good friend and teacher John Wimberley who once said that one may need to return to the same place many times for the true essence of it to be revealed. Every time you return to the same place you see more and more.
Over the years I have walked the Lithia river several hundreds of times, many of which with my good friend and mentor David Lorenz Winston an acclaimed photographer best known for his work called “Solitude”. One day we were standing on a bridge talking about photography as usual and David was pointing out all the amazing patterns in the water that day and something in me connected. It was like the spirit of the place was calling me in, metaphorically speaking I felt I was ready to cross the bridge and explore what is on the other side. (continued below).
I would like to explain the background behind the waterfall prints you see above. Over the years I have walked Lithia Creek hundreds of times, many of which were with my good friend and mentor, David Lorenz Winston, an acclaimed photographer, best known for his work called “Solitude.” One day we were standing on a bridge talking about photography as usual and David was pointing out all the amazing patterns in the water that day – and then something in me connected. It was like the spirit of the place was calling me into its sacred consciousness. Metaphorically speaking, I felt I was ready to cross the bridge and explore what is on the other side.
The next day it was raining and cold and yet I could not resist picking up the camera and go to the creek. Lithia creek has a long history of being an American Indian healing grounds. A sacred place where the local tribe would come to rejuvenate the body and spirit. That day I could feel that history more than any other, it was an unusually fast running, turbulent waters as the rain must have melted the snow peaks. I walked my usual route but somehow it felt different. I took a number of photographs until the rain started to poor harder and harder. My gear started to get wet and it was clear sign that my time has run out. I have returned several days later and after only a few shots my battery has run out, I took it as another sign the time was up. I would return to the creek several more times during that months and each time spending a little longer. Until one day I got a sign that at least for a period all that needed to be revealed to me by the Lithia Creek has been revealed. Being a pushy guy that I am I have returned to photograph at the creek several more times only to spend time walking up and down with nothing to show for it. The window of opportunity was closed for the time being, but I was grateful for the gift that I received.
Many indigenous cultures believe that everything in nature is alive and possesses its own spirit. As humans we need to respect and cherish it. That was certainly my experience during these days at Lithia river. It taught me how to listen and interact with nature on a deeper level. That it is a two way relationship that can evolve and grow into a beautiful union given there is respect and understanding. Finally it taught me that nature photography is the fruit of such a relationship, it is the reward for patience, persistence and understanding of the spirit of nature.
