Flower Close Up: Print #5: Morning Glory Mandala

This perfect geometry of this Morning Glory is a great example of the miracle of nature. The five pointed star forming in the center of the flower is one represents one of the most ancient symbols on our planet. The ancient Greeks termed such forms as Sacred Geometry, infact it was Pythagoras of Samos, that helped put sacred geometry "on the map". In the east such geometry became known as “Mandalas”. The five-pointed star symbol forming at the center of this flower is one of the most sacred symbols. Gentle gray stokes radiating from the center of the Morning Glory form a perfect Star Mandala

Inspirational Poem

Doubt thou the stars are fire,
Doubt that the sun doth move,
Doubt truth to be a liar,
But never doubt I love.
William Shakespeare (1564-1616),

Sacred Geometry

Geometry in nature arranges the shapes of the molecules and crystals that make up our bodies and the physical cosmos. It is the key to the creation of the universe. In his introduction to the book A Beginner's Guide to Constructing the Universe. Michael Schneiders says: "It's a shame that children are exposed to numbers merely as quantities instead of qualities and characters with distinct personalities relating to each other in various patterns. If only they could see numbers and shapes as the ancients did, as symbols of principles available to teach us about the natural structure and process of the universe and to give us perspective on human nature."

Studying and meditating on geometry helps us to better understand the laws, patterns and blueprints within nature. As we are part of nature, it can help us key in to and become more of our true selves, the magnificent spiritual beings who we really are. But if you are not into that, just studying the wonders and beauty of geometry is a healthy and thoroughly enjoyable past time anyway!

Information on Planting Morning Glory

Morning glories are prized not only for their ease of care, but for their incredibly rapid growth - as much as 15-20 feet tall in practically no time at all...

As such, morning glories can often be seen climbing up trellises, providing shade for country porches or decorating chain link fences in town.

So called because their flowers open as the first rays of sunshine appear over the horizon, the morning glory belongs to the Convolvulaceae or sweet potato family.

However, families with young kids or pets should be aware that morning glory seeds are considered poisonous and may cause digestive upset, stupor, hallucinations or even coma if enough are ingested.

Since seed coats are very, very tough, they should be soaked overnight before planting. Pick a sunny spot in prepared soil and plant about 1/2 inch deep and 12 inches apart. If no trellis or support is handy at the time, you can plan on having to install one... very soon!
