This image a leaf that has fallen on the rock is a classic portrayal of the wonder of autumn: the marble-like texture of the leaf and a subtle aura around it, the washed-out, old rock with its gray rough exterior. There is a certain beauty to this cycle of death and rebirth.

Fallen Leaves
by Deane P. Goodwin
Evening approaches, gentle breeze blowing
My chimes ring a bittersweet song of fall color
chanting prayers and singing
Praises of the circle
Renewal awaits in the colors of the sun
Rising to the heavens on Golden Eagles' wing
Prayer defined as action defined as prayer
The wheel turns
In the center stands, unmoved, the Mother
Guardian of love and life
Nurturing arms upraised for all
Life in the spiral
Leaves, the sacrifice
Labyrinthine dance conjured by ancient Shamen
In amber salute to the dream
Promise, made on the smoke of Autumn's fire
Recognition of
Truth handed down so long ago
Leaves from golden
Become
Green
Alive
And we sing
Praises of the circle
Autumn
by Starrlite
We see life ending
as summer closes.
The dew lies longer
the breeze reddens noses
The deer linger less
as opening day nears
and turkeys take flight
on the winds of fear
The nuts on the ground
are stolen much quicker
for late night snacks
in the cold of mid-winter
the trees drop their leaves
and corn stalks turn brown.
The canning is done
for the season's abound
The smells of fresh pies
reach across the yard,
yet, winter is coming..
will it be hard?
Since we can't foretell
of the first snowfall,
the groundhog just waits..
to end it all.
Autumn - Life and Death Surround Us!
By Beau Golden
I walk in the park and I hold my breath
We are always surrounded by life and death
Old, old men playing bowls on the lawn
Tiny little children float boats on a pond
A cat carries a now dead mouse in his teeth
A lady pushes a carriage with a baby beneath
Life and death surround us in the days we rehearse
Change is the constant in the universe
Trees without leaves may soon decompose
We witness the blossom of a newborn rose
Once my father got a boat and we sailed
Last month he died as his kidneys failed
My best friend I've known since almost age one
Last month gave birth to his first son
A dead fish floats to the top of a wave
Paw bearers carry a casket to the grave
We find suicide and salvation at the end of a knife
Crying heralds the end and beginning of a life
A robin feeds her babies with the food she has found
But she'll never feed the baby that fell out and hit the ground
I walk in the park reborn with each sweet sound
As life and death constantly surround
